LAWYER

Employment and Labour Lawyer, 1–5 YEARS

Levitt LLP seeks Employment and Labour Lawyers to join our dynamic and growing team managing both employer and employee files. You will be given the opportunity to develop your own practice while learning from and assisting highly experienced Senior Lawyers in complex employment litigation and providing advice to national and international clients on employment and labour related matters. You will also have the opportunity to participate in various media platforms and mediums to discuss and analyze current employment and labour legal issues.

Articling Student 2024/2025

Levitt LLP intends to hire 2-3 Articling students for the 2024/2025 term under the Law Society of Ontario’s Articling Recruitment Procedures for Toronto employers.

Our boutique firm practices in all areas of employment law (both for employees and employers), including human rights and management-side labour matters. The successful candidate will be involved in research, drafting (pleadings, factums, briefs, affidavit of documents, termination letters, legal memoranda), and will have many opportunities to attend mediations, motions, examinations for discovery, and other court and tribunal proceedings with senior counsel. Several of our past students have also had the opportunity to run their own small claims trials and human rights hearings (under the supervision of a lawyer at the firm). Levitt LLP provides a dynamic, fast-paced environment and the opportunity for an entrepreneurial student to grow into an excellent lawyer while working on high profile matters.

Accounting Clerk

Accounting Clerk

We have an immediate opening for a full-time Accounting Clerk. The successful candidate reports directly to the Accounting Manager. Applicants must have a minimum two (2) to five (5) years’ experience working in a law firm. Experience working with the Gost Practice is beneficial for this position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Reports to Accounting Manager
  • Accounts Receivable, and administrative duties, as assigned and required
  • Following up with clients re payments
  • Prepare deposits and take to bank
  • Accounts payable
  • Prepare bank reconciliations
  • Clerical duties such as maintaining filing and records systems
  • Data entry
  • Ensure the strict confidentiality and privacy of financial records as they relate to the
    organization and its business partners
  • Invoicing to clients on a monthly basis
  • Keep the Accounting Manager informed of potential accounting and billing problems

Skills and Experience

  • Proven / previous accounting experience in a law firm
  • Familiarity with bookkeeping and basic accounting procedures
  • Competency in MS Office and knowledge of the Ghost Practice
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Aptitude for numbers
  • Highly organized
  • College diploma in accounting or related field
  • Strong communication and relationship management skills
  • Hours of work are from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm.

Legal Assistant

Legal Assistant

Applicants must have a legal assistant diploma from a recognized legal program and a minimum of five (5) years of experience working in the area of civil litigation. A background in employment law is considered an asset. The applicant must have a strong work ethic, be collaborative, analytical, adaptable, positive, and proactive.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide executive-level administrative support to lawyers and enhance office effectiveness
  • Prepare/transcribe, edit, format, and revise correspondence, memoranda, reports, litigation documents, forms, and other documentation
  • Proofread documents/correspondence, check for appropriate formatting, spelling, grammar, etc.
  • Answer and direct phone calls
  • Assist lawyers in the preparation and coordination of hearings and trials
  • Record and monitor court appearance dates, pleadings and filing requirements
  • Coordinate service and filing of proceedings with agencies and courts
  • Schedule and coordinate discoveries, expert witnesses, mediations, or other court-designated hearings
  • Monitor and follow-up with evidence gathering
  • Maintain an in-depth knowledge of legal terminology, court rules and procedures, as well as labour and employment terminology, where applicable
  • Enter dockets; liaise with the Accounting department
  • Prepare and submit expense reports for lawyers
  • Maintain lawyers’ contact lists

Skills and Experience

  • Experience working as a legal assistant
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience working in a law firm with a focus on civil litigation and particularly employment and labour litigation
  • Qualification of either Legal Assistant or Law Clerk diploma
  • Familiarity with law, legal procedures, protocols, and court system
  • Strong knowledge of legal terminology and Ontario’s Rules of Civil Procedure
  • High proficiency in English
  • Attention to detail and superior word processing, spelling, proofreading and editing skills
  • Superior organizational skills
  • Fast and accurate typing speed with excellent attention to detail and diligent proofreading skills
  • Ability to manage multiple activities and work under pressure to meet tight deadlines
  • Decisiveness and an ability to carry out with minimal supervision and direction
  • Professional attitude with maintaining strong client relationship
  • Possess a team-player attitude and keen enthusiasm, and ability to deal with all levels of staff
  • Proficiency using MS Office, Outlook and GhostPractice
  • Experience with Philips SpeechExec dictation is a plus
  • Knowledge of electronic filing of documents through CaseLines and One-Key
  • High level of discretion and confidentiality
  • Hours of work are from 9 am to 5:30 pm.; flexibility required to meet important deadlines.
